Case History 1: Carlsbad Seapointe
Resort (Carlsbad, CA) |
|
Area: |
Clubhouse, kitchen and food preparation
areas (newly constructed) |
|
Ceiling height: |
~20 ft. Previously used halogen PAR lamp
120W for the recessed downlights |
|
Problem: |
Not bright enough and it was very
difficult to frequently change burnt out bulbs. |
|
Solution: |
PowerRim™ 42Ws (equivalent to
200W incandescent light output) were selected after on site testing
and approval by the owners’ association. |
|
Savings after conversion to PowerRim: |
64% reduction in energy
consumption with a much higher lighting level! |
|
Case History 2: University of
California, San Diego, Medical School |
|
Area: |
Elevator lobbies and public areas in Medical
Teaching building. |
|
Ceiling height: |
~10 feet Previously used 75W
incandescent reflector lamps. Tried many different types and
brands of disposable CFLs in the recessed downlights without success. |
|
Problem: |
Too little light and lamps did not last
10,000 hours as advertised. Frequent re-lamping due to early
failures of the disposable CFLs. Areas were dark and dingy. |
|
Solution: |
PowerRim™ 18W (equivalent to 75W incandescent light output)
were installed and was commented as being “too bright”, so, UCSD maintenance
staff capped-off every other lighting fixture and used only half the number
of downlights. |
|
Savings after conversion to PowerRim: |
88% reduction in energy consumption with improved,
evenly diffused lighting. |

Case History 3: Coronado Springs Resort
& Convention Center,
Walt Disney World (Orlando, FL) |
|
Area: |
2,000 guest bathrooms in this hotel and
convention complex. |
|
Ceiling height: |
~ 8 ft. Bathrooms were too
dimly lit. |
|
Problem: |
Tried all the other solutions and disposable CFLs. Even installed
new fixtures but light output was still weak and could not penetrate to
the shower stall area of the bathrooms. Fixture could not
accommodate higher wattage incandescent lamp due to overheating and
triggering of the thermal safety switch inside the recessed can.
Electricity costs were not a main issue as Disney generates its own at 3
cents KWH. |
|
Solution: |
PowerRim™ 26W (equivalent to 100W incandescent light
output) was chosen after testing and comparing with all potential
solutions. The bathrooms are now much brighter and the light penetrated
behind the shower curtain, providing more and better lighting for the
guests. |
|
Savings after conversion to PowerRim: |
PowerRim™ was considered an UPGRADE for the bathroom and resulted in a 74%
reduction in energy consumption from previous lighting.
