CFLs are 4 times more efficient than incandescent lamps, and typically last 10-13 times longer.  But CFLs need a ballast to function, and the ballast is sensitive to the heat generated by CFLs which is trapped inside recessed downlights.  A typical 23-watt CFL can raise temperatures to 70˚C in the downlight.  The maximum operating temperature recommended for an electronic ballast is 40˚C.  Temperatures above 40˚C will destroy the ballast and cause chronic early failures.

While for every 10º C increase in ambient temperature, the ballast life is reduced by 50% and components are irreversibly damaged by the heat, ballast life is also doubled for every 10ºC reduction in operating temperature.

The exclusive PowerRim™ system features a "cool zone" where the ballast is located, keeping temperatures in the recommended range, and virtually eliminating early failures.
